What is the Facial Nerve (Seventh Nerve)?
The seventh cranial nerve, also known as the facial nerve, controls the muscles responsible for facial expressions, eyelid movement, tear and saliva production, and part of the taste sensation.
When affected, it can lead to facial paralysis, commonly known as Bell’s palsy.
Causes of Facial Nerve Palsy
Facial nerve dysfunction can result from a variety of causes, including:
-
Viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, herpes zoster)
-
Ear infections or sinusitis
-
Nerve compression due to tumors or trauma
-
Diabetes or high blood pressure
-
Autoimmune conditions
-
Sudden exposure to cold air or wind
Symptoms of Seventh Nerve Palsy
Facial paralysis symptoms usually appear suddenly and may include:
-
Drooping or weakness on one side of the face
-
Inability to smile or close the eye
-
Loss of taste in the front part of the tongue
-
Excessive tearing or drooling
-
Increased sensitivity to sound
-
In chronic cases: Facial synkinesis (involuntary movements)
